  • What is a Medicaid waiver, and how do I get one
A Medicaid waiver ensures comprehensive care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, and some seniors. To qualify for a waiver, the individual must meet specific requirements; these waivers provide access to care and support to help individuals live at home instead of in a care facility. State agencies carry many different waivers through different agencies. If you are working with a Case Manager or Support/Service Coordinator, they will be able to assist you in which waiver may be available for your needs.
  • Is a Medicaid waiver different from Medicaid?
Each state could have a different process for obtaining a waiver. Not everyone that is on Medicaid has the waiver. Medicaid waivers are affiliated with an individual state’s Medicaid program. Please reach out your Case Manager or Support/Service Coordinator to see if you have access to the waiver. Gray Matters Alliance is always willing to talk to your Case Manager or Support/Service Coordinator for further clarification.
  • Does private insurance cover assistive technology?
Each private insurance plan is unique. Individuals must review their specific coverage to understand benefits, deductibles, out-of-pocket costs, co-payments, exclusions, and limitations. Some private insurance companies will cover communication (AAC) devices every 5 years.
  • Does Medicare cover assistive technology?
Durable medical equipment (DME), assistive technology, and communication devices could be covered through Medicare. However, a Medicare plan or Managed Care Organizations might only cover a portion of specific DME products or supportive technology. Some devices might be excluded from coverage.
